BIOL 4844/5844 – Advanced Proteomics and Biological Mass Spectrometry Catalogue description: Introduction to mass spectrometry (MS) instrumentation and advanced proteomic methods for complex systems biology applications including peptide mass fingerprinting, tandem MS, differential expression analysis, posttranslational modifications, phospho/glyco-proteomics, and bioinformatics tools for the evaluation and interpretation of mass spectrometry data. Biological topics that are addressed include: cell cycle, phospho-signaling, cancer, biomarkers and drug targets. The course includes three 4-hour lab sessions. The course is open to any graduate/advanced undergraduate students from Virginia Tech and the VT Carilion Medical School (Biology, Chemistry, Physics, GBCB, Biochemistry, Plant Pathology, HNFE, Engineering, etc.).
